FAI Net Inspection.

FAI Net Inspection (First Article Inspection – Net)

FAI (First Article Inspection) is a detailed inspection of the first produced part to verify that it meets all design requirements. It involves checking the part carefully so that every requirement defined in the design is properly verified. The inspection focuses on ensuring that the produced part aligns with the intended design before moving forward.

What is Net Inspection?

“Net Inspection” means that inspection is performed directly against the CAD model (3D) instead of, or along with, 2D drawings. In this method, the actual produced part is compared with the CAD model to verify that it matches the design. The comparison is done to ensure that the part follows the design requirements and that there are no differences between the actual part and the model.

Inspection Methods

FAI Net Inspection is often performed using:

  • CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine)
  • 3D scanning systems

These methods are used to measure the part and capture the required data. The collected measurements are then used for inspection and comparison with the design values to verify accuracy.

What It Includes

The FAI Net Inspection process includes the following steps:

  • Ballooned drawing or model for clear identification of all features
  • Measurement and recording of all dimensions of the part
  • Comparison of actual values with nominal values from the design
  • Tolerance verification to ensure requirements are met
  • Inspection report (often per AS9102 in aerospace)

Each of these steps helps in ensuring that the inspection is carried out completely and that all required details are properly checked and recorded.

Purpose

The purpose of FAI Net Inspection is to ensure that the first produced part meets all design requirements and matches the intended design. It is carried out to:

  • Confirm that the first manufactured part matches design intent
  • Catch issues early before mass production
  • Validate tooling, programs, and processes

By performing this inspection, any issues can be identified at an early stage and addressed before continuing further production.

FAI Net Inspection (First Article Inspection – Net) is a quality check process that verifies the first produced part meets all customer drawings, dimensions, and specifications before mass production begins.
The key steps are:
review drawings → measure dimensions → verify materials → inspect surface finish → conduct functional test → complete FAI report → get customer approval.

Key documents include engineering drawing, dimensional report, material certificate, surface finish report, calibration records, control plan, and customer approval form.
FAI Net focuses only on verifying the first part dimensions and quality. PPAP is a broader 18-element process covering part inspection, process capability, FMEA, and control plans. FAI Net is part-focused, PPAP is process-focused.

IATF 16949 requires proof that a manufacturing process can produce correct parts before full production. FAI Net provides that proof by confirming the first part meets all dimensional, material, and functional requirements.
